I removed about 50 green sunfish over the weekend with my ultra-light panfish rig. 5'6" cherrry wood rod and little shimano spinning reel with 6lb test. This 'green sunfish' hit and it took about 10 or 12 minutes working the drag to get em tired enough to land. I didn't know who would blink first, me or the fish. Needless to say it scared the crap out of me. Landed him with a little 1/8 ounce rooster tail. The little hook was barely in the upper lip and just fell out when I picked him up. Biggest fish out of this tank in a while. Caught some good sized blue-gills too. There may be hope...

PS right at 5 pounds, but skinny.

Mean Green Sunfish...

More blue gill are on the way. Thanks guys for this great forum.

See what happens when you follow the experts advice? Things are looking up already. No telling how big the bass will get if you remove another 50.

Yeah Dave, I figure at this rate I'll have 15Lb Bass by the end of the summer. I did find out some interesting info about this tank though. Not only did I catch a good number of green sunfish, I caught almost an equal number of quality bluegill too. The largest non-bass was a huge bluegill. When I downsized the presentation I was surprised at the number of 'quality' sunfish in the tank. I think the greenies are wising up though, the word is out, we're after em. Oh and the coons say thanks for the buffet!

Now about the over-fed coon population....

I suspect that if Green Sunfish grew to 5 lbs, there would be a lot less objection to them.

Hey Grayson, Don't you know that everything is bigger in Texas?

I use a similar presentation - think really really small - to catch whatever panfish are in the pond I'm fishing and use those little guys as bait. But as you discovered, sometimes you get more than you bargain for. I wish I had a picture of the 5 pound catfish I caught this spring on my lightweight rig with 4 lb mono and a tiny brass hook on the 1/64 oz jighead. One of the funnest fights I've ever had in any kind of fishing! Some of my friends give me some good-natured ribbing about my penchant for catching the little guys, but I don't think you can get much more exciting than knowing you don't have any power or strength on your side as an obviously big fish starts making that drag on that poor little reel sing!
