We built a house this past year on a 4.5 acre lake with about 10 other houses on it. Last year I caught an 11.2# bass in Sept when the water great color to it... about 16-18 inches visibility. The pond has been muddy all spring and most of the summer due to construction of new houses and the resulting runoff of silt. We still caught bass but was not great fishing (2-3 fish would be a good day).

Well the pond cleared up to about 16-18 inches visibility recently and the fishing has gotten better. Yesterday morning I caught an 8.11# bass on a crankbait early in the morning. What's interesting is that there are very few medium to large baitfish. There are a ton of Gambusia's but the bluegill population is very low (we hardly ever catch any). Its got alot of bullheads and some large 3-12# CC's. I don't know how these big fish make a living in this pond but I'm glad they do!!! Any explainations?

It sounds like the bass are making a living off the bullheads. However, this will probably be temporary. If it were me, and it's not, I would probably stock a lot of large, breeding size, bluegill. I would also eliminate a buch of small bass by keeping everything under 13 inches.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
