When my pond level rises, I will have a sizable area that will seasonally change between submerged and dry. It will be quite shallow, and I am wondering if I could plant a few cypress. I love these trees, especially there roots, just so unique. This is no where near the dam, kind of a spot where the pond just slowly spreads out. This spot during the summer would definitely dry up, and during the rains would be under 6-12 inches water. Does anyone have any experience with these trees, and know if they would do well in my pond?

Hi robo,

I agree very unique, beautiful trees. I have them in my yard. No personal exp. in a pond but I have seen cypress knees take over small bodies of water. They just start popping up every where around the original trees. You may like it. It makes for good fishin spots.

robo is there a reason or purpose to all the shallow water? Shallow areas can be a lot of work and tend to fill in with muck quickly.

Cypress do a good job of filtering out soil and cleaning water. They do spread by floating seeds so you will have to deal with all the seedlings quickly. They can be sprayed easily. They are beautiful trees and the roots and knees are very good cover for small fish.

I am lengthening my pond's dam, which will increase size slightly and depth in most areas by 2-3 feet. This is the only section of my pond that will not have steep banks that drop off rapidly to 3 foot when full. The bank in this area will gradually slope downward at perhaps 6 to 1 ratio.

Robo2011,

I've got four of them in a shallow area of one pond...and absolutely love them. They don't grow very fast at all in this pond, nothing like they grow on higher ground where they can occasionally dry out. A front-yard bald cypress planted at the same time as the pond cypress is now easily 40 to 50 feet whereas the pond cypress are only 6-7 feet at best. Great tree!!

Robo,

I've got about 15 of them on my property. I posted some photos in the "Placing rocks around the edge" thread.

All of the trees are about 12 - 13 years old. The 2 in the water are growing the slowest but the don't get the full sun that the others do. 3-4 of the trees are about 50' tall.

I love them... The fish love them too. You're in for a good fight when you drop a plastic worm down between the roots. LOL...

Jack.....
