Wow, I didn't expect it so soon...

I bought FHM and an 80:20 BG/RES mix 3 weeks ago (2" fish) and they're guarding nests already. I couldn't believe it. I've "seen them" previously (their signs anyway, the splashes that look like a light rain) but this is the first time I've SEEN them.

Unfortunately, the pond is still "stabilizing" and loses about an inch a day. I'm about 3ft from full pool. Hopefully we'll get some GOOD rain soon and they won't lose any eggs. These are the shallow nests that are just appearing as the water lowers. They're in about 12" of water right now.

BTW, how long does it take between nesting and little ones hatching?

I've got a water snake couple and a blue heron hanging around, will they be a fish problem or a problem for the 7 billion tadpoles and the adult toads and frogs?

Two inch fish and nesting? The only way I could see that happening is if they are stunted older fish.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The water snake should be no problem, the blue heron will probably give you a bad time if your fish are in 12" of water.

1/4 & 3/4 acre ponds. A thousand miles from no where and there is no place I want to be...

The water snake will eat about 1 small fish per day, depending on temperature. The blue heron will eat several frogs, several snakes, and many fish per day.
