I've been reading and learning much from this forum. I have just finished having my 3-4 acre lake finished in Central PA. I have depths from 2-14' at various intervals and want to place fish structure such as pallets, stones, old tires, etc. My question is....what depths to place the tires and pallets for FH minnows. Is there a depth at which your wasting you're time placing structure? Is it best to keep structure in a certain range for best results? Do trout benefit from structure or don't they care? I need to place my structure this week, as pond is filling up faster than expected.
Thanks for any advice

I'm a long ways from being the FH expert, but my fatheads would spawn readily on structures placed anywhere from 1-4 feet of water.
What type of trout will you be stocking, randall?

I'm no trout expert, but I think I will start with RB and Brook trout. I talked to a local trout hatchery that recommended trying a small number of trout to see if my temps./PH would be acceptable. So I think I'll try that next spring and see if they make it through August when temps are highest.

You might be a redneck if you build a pond in Central PA and fill it with old tires

If your particular trout species is piscivorous, then the pallets may benefit the trout from a foraging standpoint. If your trout eat only pellets, then I would assume the structure will be a wash.

I don't plan on feeding routinely since I live 30-40min. from the pond. Would feeding pellets periodically (i.e. once a week) be OK? What about hatchery trout that are used to eating pellets.... then have to forage? I guess they learn or starve?
