i am going upo north this week and was thinkin of using a minnow trap to see if i can i.d. any fish in the pond.
If you bait a minnow trap with bread how do you keep the bread from just floating out of the wire mesh holes? Is something better than bread i should use?

If you place a whole piece of bread in the trap it will hold together for a few hours. A ham or hotdog bun last longer. Dog food and fish feed are also good choices.

Somebody once mentioned putting the bait in a mesh bag to help hold it in.

Mesh bags are good. So are 20 oz. Gatorade plastic bottles (big mouth). Put some 1/8th in. holes all over the bottle and insert fish food , some bread and a couple dog biscuits and a piece of raw bacon or piece of cut fish or minnows. This of course depends somewhat on the type of fish you are after and the time length between checkings. Meat and cut fish are good for cats, BG will come to most anything. Try for some contents that will dissolve fast (bread) and some that will last (meat and dog biscuits). Easy to refill just screw off the cap and stick some more in.

I put pellets in a zip-loc bag, then poke some little holes in it so it diffuses out slowly.

I just dump in some pellets. Some of them escape but the small fish still enter the trap. I have found that they really like bacon. Fry it about 1/2 way. It holds together better.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

When I lived in New Orleans, I learned to bait minnow traps with a can of dog food in which I punched a number of holes. Since I moved inland, I found it works on fresh-water minnows, too. You can keep the cans on hand without spoilage until ready to use a punch-type can opener, ice pick, etc. on it, and they can't resist the smell of the stuff. Lou
