Has anyone else ever observed an oily film on water seeping into a pond (and - for us - our nearby creek). It is not from surface water as it emerges midway up the bank of both pond and creek - even during droughts.
Could this be from natural gas?
It is also accompanied by a rust-tinted water/ ooze.
Sounds freaky I know, but seems harmless and odorless. (Haven't tasted it yet:).)
Looking for an idea of its cause and if it could lead to an answer to our leaking pond in Central Indiana.

Does it look almost like a little gasoline has been spilled in the water? If so it might be some iron oxide seeping out of the bank. If you can post a pic I bet alot of people will be able to help.

Holy smokes! I've never "posted" anything in a "forum" before. Talk about RESPONSE!
Wow! You guys are good! The photo and descriptions were right on.
I am not going to worry about that "problem" any more. Thanks!
Now, about those leaks....

...yeah, ya gotta love that pic from Cary. It is so innocently accurate, yet so putrid. It must be one of those "artsy" representations that I'm never gonna be able to appreciate...Iccck!

Bob-O, I did not need to visualize that! I'm still trying to shake it off, that picture was bad enough.

I have the exact same thing coming from a spring below the dam. I have tasted it and mine has very little taste to it.
In Dog Beers, I've had one.

What's the big deal? It's just iron and iron bacteria. That slimy iron bacteria is not only harmless (although it can clog pipes) it's being used to remove iron from municipal water supplies in Canada in some inovative systems.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

It causes the water to have a rusty "sweet" taste, and the laundry to come out a little yellow is all. I don't like it, but I doubt the fish will even notice it.
