http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/outdoors/20060321-1100-bn21bass.html A foul hooked fish that didn't even have it's measurements taken etc will become a world record? Anyone else find this a little bizzare? Of course the present world record doesn't even have a picture to show it was authentic. I've always had a problem with that one. What can I say, I have personal experience on how inconsistent record keeping and criteria can be.

I agree, Cecil. Definitely a little bizzare.
I'm going out on a limb and predicting that it won't be verified as a world record. My cynical side says that they are "considering" it to bring attention to their organization for as long a period of time as possible.
I'm sure it will take months to sort out and the IGFA will stay in the news for the entire time.

Dr. Condello, and what, pray tell, is your "clinical" side saying?

My clinical side says brush and floss. When you floss don't just run the floss through and out--spend some time swiping the part of the tooth just below the gumline. This is where the harmful bacteria accumulate.

So flossing could have helped this poor schlub secure the IGFA record for LMB?

I don't think it will be considered as a record; merely a footnote and maybe not even that. To do so, the IGFA would have to change their long standing certification rules and invalidate themselves.
You can bet that the marketing arms of outdoor world are twisting and turning with this shot in the arm and the outdoor scribes have new grist for their mills. "Yeah but" has always been good for business and lots of people can accept the idea of being a little bit pregnant. It's all in the marketing alchemy. Like Bruce, I'm jaded.
The next breaking news could be that Ted Turner is trying to buy the lake and privatize it.
Guess I'd better go floss and end that guilt trip.

...admittedly, this is the first time I have encountered this "mental picture": shakin like a dog passin razor blades yet it is surprisingly clear! Bob-O, you have an innate ability to share profound worldly knowledge at a level shared only by the likes of Confuscious. It is times like this that I feel like Grasshopper...my day is full and complete. I am humbled; thank you.

"Shakin' like a dog passin' razor blades." Is it just me but does that not conjure up an image of absolute unmitigated terrifying severe pain? Kind of like the thought of biting into an apply that has a razor blade imbedded in it.

What a fish, and what a true sportsman that caught it! Regardless of the foul hook, that guy is a real sportsman, and deserves the record. Releasing the fish more than makes up for the foul-hook and the lack of proper measurements, and makes Mr. Winn a super sportsman, IMHO. How many fisherman would have released that fish, and how many would have it hanging on their wall? Let those among us that have never foul-hooked a fish cast the first line.

These guys fish this lake up to 5 times a week and have done so for several years. Most of us fish in hopes of just catching a double digit fish, these guys fish knowing that each time there lure hits the water they are within a few hundred yards of a world record bass. This 75 acre lake has already produced bass in excess of 21 pounds. I find it odd that he caught a bass that weigh 25.1 lbs and did everything he was suppose to do but weigh it on certified scales. These guys new the rules but failed to complete the most routine task and that was to get the fish certified. Why would you release the fish prior to doing this? Why give up a million plus dollar check which is what a world record would be worth. IMHO its like the others that claimed they caught the world record, something aint right. Remember these were no amatures they have been in pursuit of the world record for a long time, why blow it by not getting the weight cerified. You can bet if it was the real deal he would have done everything by the book.

I agree with Big Jake.
You know they have thought about what they would do if .. they already knew where to weigh it. They already knew how to handle fish to be weighed & released.
Maybe I'm wrong but to me, Something smells fishy.

I'm with Bruce, I don't think it will be certified as THE new world record LMB. No cerified scale, no official measurements, etc.... Nice fish though! I wish our pond had just one half that size. (The NE state record LMB is only 10lbs. 12 oz. )

I read last night that the guy & his fishing pardner have decided not to pursue making the fish a world record: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishi...25.1_chase-over Whether this is actually the end of it or not, we shall see. I would like to see some more of the photographic/video evidence they had originally talked about. Fish(y) story or not, that's one heckuva fish.
It ain't much of story if you don't have pictures!
