The pond is dug and im so excited. I have been thinking of putting a water well with a submersible pump to fill and keep the water level constant in the pond, but i am clueless when it comes to this and really dont even know where to look. Anyone have wells for your ponds?
Any tips, advice and where to look and maybe pricing for something like this would be appreciated! My pond is 1/4 acre and about 8' deep. Thanks!!!!

our 300' well cost ~$3k. our recently finished pond is smaller than yours & i'd be scared to fill it from the well for fear of running it dry.

you wont regret drilling a well. i put one in for the trout pond 1/4 acre it runs continually and i fill many ponds with it also. a good well will keep up with output i pump 50000 gallons a day and i could double that and it wouldnt even phase it. its worth it . i caught 3 brook trout and 1.5 lb rainbow in 6 minutes tonight. great fun

FriskyBob: I noticed that you run your well continously. What do you think is your monthly electricity cost for the well (I assume your well is 220V?

My well is shallow about 41 ft and I can run it dry in about 2 minutes. In order to combat this I had to design a controller that will start when the casing is full, run until it is about 2 ft above the pump and then shut off until the casing is full again. It has worked out great for 3+ years now and the pump runs about 25 percent of the time. Plan to put a new one in this summer at a cost of 15.00 per ft which includes a 20' casing at the top need to get down to the next layer of limestone and into the underground lake we have in this area then I can pump all I want.

Bob...This is my first post to this board. Great site.
I had a problem well in California that supplied water to my home. It was 27 feet deep and the water level was at 25 feet. It had an 8" metal casing. I could pump it dry in about 5 minutes with a 4" pumping unit. So what I did was pulled out the pipe and foot valve, shot 4 rounds of 180gr .270 cal bullets down the casing with my deer rifle as far down into the well as I could hold my rifle. Presto!!! The resulting concussion broke loose all the built up corrosion in the casing, and afterwards I pumped water for 10 hours with the 4" pump and didn't pump it dry!!! If your well is old and has metal casing, I would give it a try.
Good luck,
Mike

FriskyBob,

I run a well 24/7 also to my 1/10th acre trout pond from May to September only. My bill is about $100.00 per month, but I can eqasily sell two fish for that amount and enjoy harvest by hook and line! (See my website)Nothing like enjoying fishing and getting paid for it! \:D

My well pump is rated at 45 gpm but I have a guage I mounted inline that says it more like 38 gpms. I took over 500 lbs of rainbows, brown, and brooks out of the pond last year before I drained and refilled. Four of the brooks would have broken the state record (biggest at 5 lbs. 2 oz and 22 inches), and I had several browns over 10 lbs. Biggest brown was almost 12 lbs. and biggest rainbow was 6 lbs. 12 oz.

Where did you get your brooks and what strain are they? I got my latest bunch from and the Red Cliff tribal hatchery north of Bayfield Wisconsin. They are Lake Nipigon strain brooks. Sure hope they grow as fast as my last source that was more domestic.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
