Greetings and Happy New Year to all! After much to do with soils testing at our pond site - we dug three 14' deep holes with a backhoe only to find mostly sand and verify that the clay is at 10 ft in one place, 6 ft in another and finally, 12 ft in the last hole - determining if we have enough clay and the right type of clay is pure speculation. The clay came out in very thick and fairly wet chuncks, so am afraid that it would not spread well. Therefore, we have come down to two choices: either take the chance and dig to the available clay or get a liner.

Based on the cost of liners, we are trying to rethink our pond size options. From the sources I can find the largest standard size EPDM liner is 50 x 100. Sealing large sheets together looks like something only the pros can do, so this is not likely. Does anyone know of a source where larger stock sheets are available?

Any comments on pursuing the clay option?

i had allmost the same problem,i found sand at 6-8 feet everywere we dug test holes for my 4 acre lake.so we built a levee so we would not have to take a chance with pond leaking.we dug our pond 4-5 feet deep and put a levee around 3/4 of pond about 3 feet high so we now have a pond with 6-8 feet of water.this might be a option for you, good luck.

ylazyyranchgirl,

You might look at contacting Colorado Pond Liners. They make custom liners for any and all applications.

Also take a look at Bend Tarp and Liner, I bought a small liner from them for my Koi Pond but they make them any size you need at a reasonable price.
