I want to build a very small 'minnow' pond or hole next to my pond this way I will always have access to live bait. Also I remember at my dad's pond whenever we would go fishing and have excess live bait we would always take it down to the pond and sit back and wait for the show to begin. Big bass all around the lake would be chasing after these minnows and create a fantastic show to watch. I was wondering if I built this small hole in the ground and stocked it with fatheads, if putting a few hundred every couple of months just for show could set off the balance of the pond? I know Rangersedge posted he was planning to do almost the same thing except his dealt with excessive rain overflowing into the pond. But I was just wondering the effects that this might cause on the pond, if any.

I would worry about the hole drying up or becoming a mosquito haven. Why not just build a cage out of small mesh wire and float it in your existing pond. I plan on doing this and suspending it from my dock.

If you want to make a minnow pond I suggest adding a few pallet piles to encourage reproduction. I have a few clients who keep minnows in cages with some success during the cooler parts of the year. Usually the fatheads don't hold very well in cages during July and August.
