I was out last night and saw a Spotted Gar in my tank. He's about 18" long. How do I catch this thing to get him out of my pond? I don't know how he got there. My problem is that my pond is 25 acres which makes finding him hard. Only seen him this one time.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The best thing to do is to go out in the middle of the day and drive around in your boat. Gar in the heat of summer float on the surface like a log. Look in the shade and out in the middle. You can take him out with a .22 or a top water lure. (.22 recommended) Also if it is just a spotted gar it wont hurt much. They may get to 15 pounds at the most and won't cause alot of trouble. A 18 incher will only take out small perch, fathead minnows, and baby shad. These gar usally don't take prey of much size because they have a small mouth. If i was you i wouldnt worry much. I would carry a .22 anytime i would go to the tank and if you see pop him.

If it was me I wouldn't worry about it too much. If he truly is a spotted gar he won't get much bigger. He also will eat smaller fish that shouldn't cause you a lot of damage (small throat). Now if it was an alligator gar I would be worried.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

One more thing. If you really want to get him I would rig up a lantern or spotlight on the front of your boat and go on a spearing trip at night. You may eventually see him along with any others fairly motionless in the water if you have any clarity at all.

We spear longnose, shortnose, and spotted gar up here all the time.

Just don't eat the eggs. They are highly poisonous. They'll kill you in a heartbeat. Not that you would be tempted. They are green. But just in case.
