Last spring I had a fish kill on my one acre pond. As I had a dense algae bloom I thought it was due to not enough oxygen. Well, this spring I had another fish kill, even with my aerator running constantly. I have noticed that the fish appear to have what pet store operators describe as "ick." Has anyone out there experienced this, and what can be done about it ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hornstrider I live in Hanover, PA. Your overpopulation problem sounds like a pretty nice problem to have........Either thin your bass by eating some, or introduce a bigger predator, like Northern Pike. What steps have you been taking to thin your population ?

I don't think Northern pike would survive the harsh summers dowwn here. What species of fish do you have in your pond?

I have added fathead and rosey red minnows, along with other forage (snails, clams and crayfish), channel cats, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch. I have a decent population of largemouth bass. I may add several Northern Pike and walleye, I'm undecided as of yet. Additionally, as I have an algae problem so I recently added 5 large koi, for a total of 7, in the hopes that they will help control the weeds.

Hey CAW,

Is this 'Ick' appearing on the fish before or after death? Are all of the fish being wiped out or only specific species/sizes?

It appears prior to their death. At first it seemed to affect only largemouth bass. However, I have since seen it on bluegill, a few crappie, and one yellow perch. Have you seen this before ?

To add to my previous post at first it seemed to affect only the larger fish, however, that too has changed, and both small and large fish are now affected.

I have indeed seen it before, however primarily with injured fish. Seemed to affect any fish that were injured especially the baitfish. Appeared to start at the site of any damaged fins or missing scales. I believe stress is also a leading factor as is low oxygen. However since you have added an aeration system it limits that posibility. Had any rapid ph change or weather change just prior to seeing these effects? (Lots of rain.. runoff ??)

The malady that fisheries biologists call "ick" manifests itself most often in fish that have been stressed. Symptoms include a whitish-gray or even pinkish looking rash or fuzzy stuff on the gills or eyeballs.

In the warm waters of Texas, it occurs most frequently in catfish or shad that have been confined, transported some distance.

Not a pretty sight.

Are your fish overcrowded? This sounds like a water quality issue.

If you don't mind starting over with your fish population, ignore the issue. If you value your fish, seek professional counsel before you lose them all.

I would definitely start with getting a test kit and checking out your water. There are lots of sites online with information about 'Ick' and it's treatment, most are for the aquarium but hold true for ponds for the most part but in a larger scale.(You just don't have the control in a pond that you do in an aquarium). Like Mark says, you may want to get a Pro in to check things out if there are no obvious reasons for the spread of the disease or it's rapid occurence.

Potsy......I had my water tested last summer, the results came back ok. Ph was a little low, so on a recommendation I added lime. Other than that there were no reported problems with my water. My pond is an older pond (50+ years), and there is some sedimentation in need of removal. I will get a water testing kit, Thanks for the reply.

Mark;

Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned in my post to Potsy, I have an older pond, with 50+ years of sedimentation that is in need of removal. Could this sedimentation be part of the problem, or in general, could it be adversely affecting the water quality of my pond, even with a heavy duty aerator in operation ? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
