Can bass, bluegill, white perch or channel cats live under a thick mat of duckweed? Can grass carp be added or will they die too? The pond has duckweed that looks like a carpet over it's entirety

Not sure about the fish. However spray the weed to kill it. But, spray only about a third of the pond at a time. Dieing plant life sucks oxygen from the water. It will take awhile.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The mat blocks off the sunlight from getting to the water and that stops all photosynthesis of any submerged weeds and phytoplankton who produce O2 for the fish.

I've used Clipper herbicide with a surfactant for watermeal. It will work on duckweed too. There weren't any fish in the pond so I just sprayed the whole thing and waited. I added aeration then started stocking. Problem is that there are some local ponds to me that are not maintained so the geese/ducks bring the watermeal back.

Will Diuron kill duckweed? To be honest, yes, but it's not rated for use in ponds and I was told that it transferred to the fish flesh. The reason that the company that bought the rights to produce the chemical specifically excluded any liability for the previously manufactured product due to lawsuit concerns since there is some data showing that it possibly could cause cancer. If I knew of a pond that it was used in, I wouldn't change eating the fish that were in the pond.
