My father and I are in process of building an 8 acre lake. One of the things we have talked about doing is also building a small pond above the larger lake to breed BG to continue to have fresh forage fish for the bass. Does anybody have experience in this of "does" and "don't"? How big does it need to be? How deep?

What are the best ways to construct so you can easily transfer the fish? Has anybody ever put in like a 18" pipe that you can drain the bait pond to the larger lake? We have a water well that we can refill it with.

I just need some direction on best ways to do this to make it simple, effective, and efficient.

Welcome Jb. A couple of thoughts.
Assuming Comanche Texas. The drain pipe sounds good as long as the pipe doesn’t get leaks around it. Seen that issue several times. Also, in a deluge, the BG will be swept into the bigger pond before you are ready.

The well to fill it sounds like a good deal. Due to well water not being oxygenated, you should run the water over some sort of baffles to break it up and add O2. The baffles can be a bunch of rocks.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

You should be subscribing to Pond Boss magazine - $35.00 / yr and money very well spent if you have a pond. If you are building a larger pond you should be getting one or both Pond Boss books. "Perfect Pond Want One?" and pond builder Mike Otto's book "Just Add Water". Spend a little money for good homework and your pond will be better well built.

A recent PB article covered your topic. I will look to find which issue contained the article. Each PB issue has an article for the topic 'Mini-Pond'.
The feature article was last year May-June 2017. "BUILDING HATCHERY PONDS" Lusk explains design of hatchery ponds and are they for you? Key rules to understand.

A list of magazine Contents and compete Indexes for all back issues can be found in the Archives Section. Indexes are after the Contents of each year.

teehjaeh57 a member here has described his ponds he built that have drains that can move fish from one pond to the next one. A search should find his posts about this topic. I will look. Okay here it is.

A small amount of money for subscription won't hurt.

Here is a thread that has a number of links to old threads about specialty ponds, some of them being forage ponds.

List of specialty ponds including forage ponds

I know Teehjaeh57 has one forage pond with a pipe where he can drain it along with the fish into his main pond.

One thing to watch on a small pond is the flow through rate. I have two small ponds that flow into my main pond. One is a 1/20th acre forage pond where I raise RES and GSH. Another is a 1/10th sediment pond designed to catch and condition runoff from an agriculture field before it gets into the main pond.

Both ponds I use to raise forage. But the sediment pond, do to it being specifically designed to handle large inflows of water, at times has very high exchange rates of water. This can be very hard on the fish during the times of high exchange rates. At times it might have several full water exchanges in a matter of a day or two. Very stressful on the fish.

The 1/20th acre pond has a more balanced watershed so does not have this stressful condition.

Just something to be aware of if you put a very small pond above the large pond in such a way that lots of water runs through it. I would advise to match the watershed to the pond size if raising fish is the main goal.
