Lets say a guy wants to be more hands off feeding wise. Kids like to catch hybrid bluegill. Fathead minnows reproduced like crazy. However I like diversity. Im leaning towards reverting back to bluegill, and lmb and letting nature do its thing. The feeding is fun for awhile but its hard to get to every night, and the constant intrusion has had a negative effect on our wildlife viewing.

Ended up with another 100 hybrid bluegill and 50 cc. Gonna continue feeding. I wish fish feeders were as cheap as deer feeders.

I have had good luck with an inexpensive deer feeder for feeding my fish. I only use it when I am out of town because I like to hand feed, but it has seen a few week long employments and performed nicely. Here is my thread on the feeder. For $50 and some way to hang it...your in business...

So everytime we get a high water event I lose a bunch of fish. Last week I had water going around the end of the pond as well as being unable to see the overflow pipe. Getting tired of paying big money for hybrid bluegills to see them get stocked in John Redmond Reservoir via overflow. The catfish seem to stick around better. I still have some fathead minnows alive in there as well.

What are some options for this pond? Thought about throwing in some BG and LMB and letting nature take its course.

Normally the small fish try to escape first during overflow events, larger ones are much more cautious. I had my emergency spillway overflow 3 weeks ago for the only the second time in its history, and afterward there were hundreds of baby CNBG and LMB left stranded for the vultures. Biggest might have been 4 inches, most under 3.

The first event I found multiple large hbg dead in puddles below. Now the corp lake is so high I am sure I stocked it. Fishing has really dropped off in the pond.

Every time we get one of those torrential downpours that takes the pond out of its banks, the roadside ditches adjacent to my property get a hundred or so yoy BG/GSF dumped into it. Never found anything larger than that, so the premise that the larger fish tend to hunker down seems to hold true. Actually helps me out a bit by getting them out of the pond.

Very few fish come up to eat, mostly CC. Took the kids fishing down there and what used to be fast and furious in 30 minutes they had maybe 4 bites but did catch 2 large hybrid bluegill. May be time to bucket stock some BG.

Most of the hybris bluegill have washed out. We havent had a bite the last 4 trips down there. I have maybe a dozen channel cats coming up to feed of the 50 I stocked. Putting 100 BG in today followed by a bass stocking this fall.

So there are still some hybrids. Kids have been slaying them on grass hoppers and I have caught several on a roadrunner. My boy also caught a channel cat. Ive caught them on the bottom with grasshoppers in the river so not suprised but he was excited.

With those regular bluegill stocked late june do I wait till next fall to stock bass?

How big were your 100 stockers?? Late june in central KS is getting to that point they may or may not bed. My end of the state they may go into first couple of weeks of july but Cedar Bluff they're gone from the beds by July. If they got off a spawn I'd say yeah, stock bass in the fall. Maybe your HBG got off enough of a spawn to support them until may of next summer. If not overly crowded, the BG may have spawned successfully. Maybe do some trapping, netting, etc. to see if you have any recruitment.

I like to wait on bass until the BG have been in for several spawns. I just had to add bluegills due to a cormorant hit. I thought I had very few bass but started catching 8 to 12 inch ones. I'm tossing them on the bank until the I wind up with wall to wall BG.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
