hey all
I'm new to the overall pond experience. Excavated old hay field which has pretty good red clay but contains gravel veins. Lined whole bottom with ~12" blue clay. Repaired a couple large bottom leaks last fall but still can't keep fill. when it is filled, loses an inch or so per day. No natural runoff but have a well to fill. Looking for some advice.

I have seen lots of discussion on Soilfloc. How well does this work if I don't know where the leak is? Somewhere on the flat where the depth will be about 6'. Bottom hole is ~10', holding water at 4'. It will fill but drains back down to the same level each time. I can't find an obvious hole, but it has to be there! Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It has been a lifelong dream to have a pond and I know my site as above is not ideal, but hey, nothing but time right?
Thanks

Pictures have to be hosted somewhere on-line like photobucket first, then put here. There is a tutorial in the archives.

Soilflock works pretty durn well, but you have to treat the whole pond basin, from high water level down to have a very good chance of it working if you don't know where the leak is.

Was the clay compacted when it was placed in the bottom of the pond? Typically compact it with a sheepsfoot roller in 6" lifts, for a total of 4 lifts, or 24" thick liner.
