Because I didn't renew last year. It sat in the garage last year.

Does your state do this?

Just doesn't sit right with me. Am I wrong?

Now I have to scrounge loose change to come up with bait money! mad

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

It doesn't seem fair, but how would a state enforce that if half the people that fail to renew claim "ah I didn't use my boat last year"?

It costs me $10 to renew my boat trailer. I could probably live with having to play catch-up.

Sorry, Cecil blush

I don't get your arguement. Why should you pay a fee for not using the trailer? And if you used it without paying the fee, your plates would obviously show they weren't renewed.

What am I missing?

.........

Seriously how is catch up justifed when it's not with other types of licenses?

Would you pay double for a fishing license if you never went the previous year?

I know it's the same with vehicles, boats I'm not sure. But I believe we have an affidavit you can sign stating your vehicle has not been drivable, e.g., on blocks, disabled, etc.

Not on your life, but I wouldn't chance getting caught without one either. The penalty is much more harsh than an "improper registration" fine. I'm not going to chance losing my boat and/or tackle over $30.

With a PS - I need to be careful about what I say here though, I haven't registered my boat trailer for 3 years, and I will need to this year shocked

Keith,

I don't get how not getting caught without a license is relevant to the discussion. I wouldn't even consider not getting one if I used the trailer. And it's pretty obvious by the plate or the boat sticker if you're not complient.

Our trailer plates are good for as long as one owns the trailer. Boat itself has to be renewed every three years.

Cecil, Registrations are just like property tax, if you own it, you pay tax on it...use is of no concern, only ownership. Here, if I fail to register by the last day the plate expires, a fine is added monthly till the max is reached. All trailers her expire on 12/31 and you can buy a one or two year plate...the 2 year only saves you a $3.50 office fee.

I understand what you're saying Cecil, and yes I slipped off track. I was just overthinking. My thought was that the DMV isn't going to believe someone who says they haven't used their trailer, veh, etc., the entire year. Unfortunately there's plenty of improperly registered vehicles and trailers on the road (let alone uninsured), with those people willing to take that chance. So when you mentioned a fishing license I was thinking on those same lines.

As Rex says his state fines you for not renewing and I'm surprised more states don't, but also glad mine doesn't. You just have to pay those months from when they expired.

Am I digging myself in a hole? crazy

Permanent trailer plates in MI. One time fee.

14,000 lb PJ Trailer I had was about $120.00 or so for a permanent plate.

Keystone TT has a permanent plate from 2007 that's still inside in a cabinet, that's never been stuck on the back of it.

Just called my buddy who bought my PJ. Said he only had to pay the tax and title transfer fee, but not the plate fee. Same permanent plate on that rig.

All states collect "tax" differently...some do it openly, some secretly and hidden, but the damn sure collect plenty of money one way or another.

Indiana is a "you gotta pay personal property tax" on what you own. Take a look at your license plate renewal. Only a % is for the plate, the rest is personal property tax.

The other option would be to have a sheriff come out and verify that the trailer ID plate is correct, and that costs some $$ too, then you take the form to the DMV for the license plate.

So you either pay it one way or another. Your choice.

If you owned the personal property last year and didn't plate it, they are collecting the personal property tax from last year AND from this year.

I get new plates every 2-3 years. Same number, just new tin. I don't ask for them, they just automatically come when I renew.

Reminds me of a time I was pulled over twice in the early am while pulling a boat. One sheriff said "nothing is legal from the bumper back" but issued no ticket and the other said ok when I told him my story. Lucky I guess smile

JKB, I'd just paid $68 for 2 year plates before heading on a run that had me winding up at Basslover's. Leaving his place, and damaging my trailer a bit in backing in to too-tight of an area, I saw my plate had been torn off somewhere. Basslover happened to have taken a pick of me going down his trail, so we saw the plate was already gone....Longer story shorter, I went to our DMV for a replacement plat and date tab...I was expecting to buy it all again, or AT LEAST pay for a new plate. I was totally pleased to only be charged a $3.50 office fee.
