First post here we go. Stumbled accross the site and already have learned alot. I work in the office of an earth work contractor so when we got a job just outside of town that needed dirt fill hauled in I told my boss I know a good place! My back yard. So we sold about 1500 CY of dirt and in return we got a nice little pond. Had the guys bring over a trackhoe and a highlift and away we went. Had to pay for fuel and a little for equipment time but that is it. Not the biggest pond but will be around 1/3 acre. Price was right. Finished building in August and figuerd it would take all this spring to fill but in the last couple of months man have we had some rain. We are now about 3/4 full. We will be around 15 feet deep. I will try to post a photo later. After reading several posts I think we are going to stock FHM as soon as I can figure out the closest place to get them. I see we have some members from IL so I hope they give me some input. We are located half way between St. Louis and Springfield, IL. I have two young kids that both love to fish so I think we are going to go for a small fishing hole with BG and maybe a few LMB. Well thanks for reading and I look forward to some good comments. Thanks, Daron

Welcome to the forum Daron. You can do a lot with 1/3 acre.

Welcome Dman, you are fairly close ta rainman and he can probably help with the stockin.
It will probably be a close call as to who enjoys the pond more. My money is on the kids cause they won't be worried about sufficient oxygen, FA, aeration, proper fish balance, what kind of feed ta use, uninvited snails, leeches, turtles, snakes, invasive weeds etc etc.
Have fun and you will enjoy your new addiction for a looong time.

Welcome to PBF Daron!

Here's a list of fish dealers the IL DNR publishes that may be helpful.

http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/fishing/Documents/PrivateFishDealerList.pdf

and here is a list of what you can legally stock in a pond in Illinois if you have a question along that line.

http://www.ifishillinois.org/programs/aquaculture/aquatic_approved_species2014.pdf

Again welcome!

Bill D.

Welcome aboard, dman!!! And you are right, whatever stocking plan you decide to go with, FHM are always a good starter for you! Your climate gives you several targeted options, or you can simply go with several species to get surprise catches.
