I work at a nonprofit organization that had been long awaiting the engineered pond design from the NRCS. They had not listened to any of our permaculture plan regarding pond location and shape; needless to say, we did not like it. So I set about designing our own pond that is to be more in line with our (brilliant) permaculture plan.
Being that the NRCS was going to have us build a typical zoned dam, that is what I set out to have built. The thing is, the ditch that will feed the pond is only 2' above the lowest ground level where the pond is planned to be. This means that there will only be a maximum of 2' of water impounded above the ground, with a maximum depth of about 10 feet or so into the excavated part. I have looked to see what is considered a small earthen dam, and found that our needs do not even register on the scale. I think 1.5m was the smallest dam mentioned.
My question: Being that there is such a small amount of hydraulic head pressure, can I get away with cutting any corners in the embankment construction? Should it be a zoned dam? Can I have a 20 year old Siberian Elm tree within 20' of the dam?
Thanks for your help.

I don't know the answer to either question so will just say welcome.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I too would be interested in the answer to this as I had considered adding 16-24" on one corner of my pond in order to gain a little more depth.
