I've been given the unique job of helping our Golf Country Club improve its fishery for all members. They are going to redesign the entire golf course over the next two years and put in a new 4-5 acre lake. I volunteered and they agreed to let me assist with the pond design, construction, stocking, and on-going maintenance.

I would love to hear some advice form anyone who has experience with golf course ponds as I get started. I'm sure there are some unique things to consider. Will keep the forum up to date on the project progress over time.

Thanks!

sounds pretty neet...I bet ferilizing it will not be a concern...LOL

Will they allow fishing in it?

Yes, the plan is to allow members to fish within some guidelines. There is an existing small lake that members fish today with some success that will be redone in the course remodel

Dang JT, first you try to stock a section of the Trinity River and now want to build a water hole on a country club golf course. You expect these floods to continue?

I would take 4 first steps. I would buy Mike Otto's book "Just Add Water". Second, I would read it. Third, I would hire Mike to come in and tell you what to do and how it should be done. Fourth, I would do just exactly what he says and most likely hire him to do it.

He lives at Lindsay, just West of Gainesville.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks Dave,
I had just ordered Mike's book so it should be on the way. Also interested in anyone's first hand thoughts on golf course fish management

And yes, the hand full of fish I stocked in the formerly stagnant section of the West fork of the Trinity below Lake Bridgeport....are probably in the gulf of Mexico by now

Golf course means golf balls in the pond means free golf balls! smile

IMHO I would consider that the club will want to harvest golf balls from the ponds when designing/building them.

JT, who would have ever thought that we would have floods? It just didn't seem possible.

JT,

Just because a crew can build a golf course doesn't mean they can build a pond. Thats where Mike comes in and can tell them exactly what needs to be done.
