Newbie here posting for the first time after a lot of lurking lol. I have a fairly new pond 6 months old. This pond was filled solely by rain and water is very muddy. I purchased 1000 lbs of gypsum and 500 lbs of lime today gonna try that route. Jar test did really well. I'm getting good vegetation on my watershed now. The pond doesn't have any vegetation in it as of yet. My question is if the gyp clears it will it stay clear I'm assuming the clay is suspended from the acidity of the rain water. Test strip had pH of 6.2 and once I get some aquatic growth will it correct itself?

Forgot to mention it's about .25 acres and the jar test cleared almost tap water clear. There were lots of little critters bouncing around in there so there is some signs of life.

txpond, Welcome to Pond Boss. Lots of good info and helpful folks here. Where abouts in Texas are you located? Post some pics when you have a chance.

Welcome to the forum txpond What part of tx are you in? Tell us what size your pond is and what type of fish you are planning on having. You might want to take a water sample to your fishery guy or TAMU for analysis then post results for the pond gurus to ponder over. If you get a good crop of grass or weeds growing around bank you will cut down on the muddy water.

Welcome txpond from deep east Texas. My 2 acre pond is almost the same age as yours. It is clearing now to about 12-14 inches and I just saw my first cnbg on the ponds edge. It takes awhile to settle but it will come. Ask lots of questions. The people on this forum are great and have helped me a great deal. Subscribe to the Pond Boss magazine and you will enjoy every page of information.

Thanks pat I'm in the south San Antonio area. I plan on having channel cats, BG, cnbg and fh. I will try and get a soil test done soon. The gyp and lime is in so we will see what happens in a week or so I don't need gin clear but anything is better than chocolate milk lol. I will try and post some pics of samples I collected.

txpond, how much time elapsed from the time you added gypsum to when the water cleared? I noticed there is no sediment in the bottom of the glass.

txpond,
I am not sure I understand what you did. Did you take a muddy sample from the pond for reference and then applied the gypsum to the pond. That would mean the last picture is a sample you took from your pond after the pond was treated?

Sorry fellas the glass was water poured from the gallon jug that the gyp was applied too. Just showing the clarity there is a lot of sediment in the gallon jug. The water bottle is just straight water from the pond. Once I saw the results of the gallon test I applied the gyp to the pond.

The amount of time to clear the gallon of water with one tablespoon of gyp was about 2hrs for total clarity.

Just applied today. I guess what I'm asking is does the gyp stay in the water or change the charge of the water permanently keeping they clay out of suspension.

IMO should your pond become turbid again for some reason, erosion for example, you will need to reapply.
