Sorry for not getting a better picture, I didn't think I would be posting this for ID opinions until closer inspection of the photo after the fact...

I have my opinion as to what species this fish is, but want other opinions and what specifically makes you think that...

I'll have a go.... GSF x RBS.....male.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

This is a tough one.. Wish you had a better pic holding it out.. I'm gonna go female based solely on ear tab size compared to body..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

A pond in south central PA. The pond does get flooded by the adjacent stream once every 8 or so years on average. So it has quite the mix of fish species.

I think Sprkplugs guess is pretty close to what the HBG looks like.

My other (uncertain) guess would be Long Ear Sunfish x GSF.

I have never used bluegill for bait. What size and style hook do you use for a 3" bluegill and where do you hook them for bobber fishing?

Thanks all for weighing in with your opinions. The mentioned fish is now in my forage fish pond. Hopefully it'll get huge and I will catch it again, maybe then we can get a 100% sure ID. I am 99.9% confident it is a male. So, it shouldn't cause issues I hope regardless of parentage...

My guess is it is a natural BG male x GSF female cross. However, how can anyone say for sure without checking gill rakers and maybe even DNA testing? It sure is fun to look at unusual sunfish hybrids and make guesses though.

Also, if you are interested in crazy sunfish hybrids, check out this thread.

That's for sure. Factor in allowances for regional adaptation, water clarity/environmental conditions, and natural diversity among hybrids, and it's all up for grabs.

That was a pretty cool hybrid though. He was rockin' that whole YP look......

I am not even sure that the dna sequence (markers) for BG and GSF are available. So even if we got a sample tested we may not be able to get an answer.
