I'm brand new and I hope I get this correct. We are about half done digging a 3 ac pond and I am looking for advice on the aeration system. 3ac 3:1 slope to 12' - 15', pond is basicaly square. The site is in the middle of our farm with no elec. 1) Do I need to run 1 or 2 diffusers 2) Power source for pump Propane? Electric? Wind is not an option. 3) What size pump?

I have been reading this site for a couple of weeks now (already got my first copy of POND BOSS)and have found it to be a great help. Thanks folks keep it up. \:D

Is propane a possible power source? Has anyone done it?

Propane is a possible power source. They make propane generators. I don't think I would run it full-time.

I would think wind or solar would be the best for a remote option.

The wind around here (about three miles southeast of lake Michigan) is feast or famin. Mid-summer we can go weeks without much of a breeze.

I am really leaning to the battery/solar panel way of doing this.

What about the sizing for aeration on my pond?

Thanks for the feedback so far.

if you have a stream near by up to 1/2 mile you can use that for power. If so give me a hollar

Scott, would it be possible to power an aerator with the runoff from a pond? There hasn't been a time this year that I've been out to my pond when the water hasn't been flowing from the overflow stand pipe. Also, I crack open the gate valve in the winter (so the pipes don't burst)so there is a constant flow of water all winter long.

No creeks to speak of. Using the ponds own water source does sound possible. I am putting in a well with an irigation pump on it. It will be rigged to start up when the pond "float" drops to a certain level. The pump will put out 24K g/hr. That is roughly 1 inch per acre hour. The pond is three acres, so in dead summer the pump would run 1 and 1/2 hours to make up for evaporation. If I could keep the needed water to 10K gallons or less for the aerator per day that would work.

It has been along time since hydrolics...can any one convert figure out that system or send me to some one that can?

I only have one or two hundred more questions. Maybe by the time the pond fills you guys will have seen half of them. ;\)

Scott,
I'm planning to build a waterwheel to power a water pump for a waterfall plus using it to operate an areator. Is there a better way to utilize the output of the pond?
