Had my scope checking to see if it was a water turkey, and uh, the bird in the tree wasn't a water turkey...

Anybody know how many fish I can expect a bald eagle to eat? Now that I have a positive ID, I've probably seen him many times perched in the trees near our pond.

Joking aside, I thought it was really cool to see one, I just hope he chooses my 2nd gen bluegill or catfish and not my brood stock bass if he decides to have a snack of two...

How big is your pond? If your pond isn't too large you may be able to run some staked lines across your pond in a few places to make him loose interest.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Could still be done with some cheap mono from Walmart and some stakes made out of furring srips. Four or five across the pond might frusrtrate the bird enough to make it move on.

Would using a dye on the water reduce visibility of the fish to the bird?

I've got a pretty "bloomy" pond with like 18"-24" visibility, so not just too clear. It's really not a "problem". I'll accept some fish loss to keep bald eagles around, not so much for feeding water turkeys... grin

He was perched by the pond, but was actually looking out into our pastures.

He may not stick around. They show up in my area but don't stay.

You could stock some sacrificial palomino trout. We did that in a pond to help keep the other trout from becoming osprey feed. The palominos were so easy to see, they became the focus of the osprey.

Sorry, just saw that you are in Houston. Trout aren't such a good idea I don't imagine.

Trout are often stocked here during the Winter. They are a put and take fish that die when the water gets too warm.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
