I have a pond that currently is about 2 acres. When full it should be around 4.5 acres. My problem is that at about 2 acres and above, the pond leaks and won't maintain the water levels. I'm thinking about allowing my cattle to water from it this winter to see if their stomping around the edges might seal the leaks. I currently have a good population of Channel Cats, bass, coppernose blue gill and redear. Is this a good idea or a very bad idea? Help with your thoughts?

Be aware that the manure from the cattle can stimulate aquatic growth when the weather warms and plan for that.

Also, the leak may be at the bottom. It might take "X" amount of water pressure on it to get it to start leaking. Every foot of water = .5 psi.
Agreed on the extra nutrients from the manure.

LIG, I agree with the nutrient deal, and I'm not sure they compact as much as churn the banks.
I have 2 small ponds I'm playing with right now that have that same scenario. It's still to early for me to get a grip on the effects on the fish. One has been treated with Alum, and one not. I should know more next year.

Be aware that the manure from the cattle can stimulate aquatic growth when the weather warms and plan for that. We had donkeys and horses around our ponds the first year and we had lots of growth of aquatic vegetation. Last year no horseys/donkeys and added Cutrine Plus Granules. It made a big difference.
