Quick question.............

Can you raise FHM in a cage?

Will they reproduce?

If given something to lay their eggs under they will and probably will even reproduce on the cage material itself. I am sure they will do fine in a cage. Now how many eggs survive, hatch and then recruit. That will depend... What is your reasoning for wanting to raise FHM in a cage?

I have used 3' pieces 3 or 4" pvc laid out near the shoreline.
the male fathead pick a nesting site in many cases 3 or more males will nest on a single piece.
You can place several of these in the pen as spawning structures.
Though I would use the open pond and station the pvc around the shore.
The population of fatheads will increase fast as long as there is food for the young.

I don't see any advantage as the fry would swim out of the mesh.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

For a kind of cool U-Tube video of their reproduction in an aquarium see this link.
