Well I finally dug a hole. I have a small spring head up hill from my new pond that flows about 10 or 11 months per year. I estimate the rate of flow to be about 5-10 gallons per minute- so yeah its petty small. Last summer i dug a 6' dia test hole to see if it would hold water and it did! The creek finally dried up about a month ago so my buddy brought his toys over and we made a big mess. It hasn't rained since the day we excavated but im sure when The spring starts up again my water level will come up withen a few days. Surface dimensions are about 30' x 70' and a max depth around 6 1/2'' I did a 4" poured concrete apron around a 16" galvanized drain pipe i had laying around, the back filled with clay and tamped it around the pipe. There is a 3' emergency spill way for now but I plan to make that bigger when i do the final grading (theres piles of mud drying out everywhere so i can spread it without leaving ruts with the loader)

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I put in 4 spawning beds yesterday at 4 different depths. 3-10" stones with a few cinder blocks mixed in. I just found a deal on used cinder blocks on craigslist so tonight ill make some 3 or 4 story fish high rise apartments. Then I'll have some submerged platforms for plants or 1/2 submerged rocks. Its lsupposed to rain here for the next few days so i need to act quick before it fills up!
I have about a ton of stone dust laying around, would fish use that? I'm thinking of using it instead of sand to make more habitat variety.

Well before the rain came i got 40 cinder blocks stacked at various depths and orientations.
Then it rained 7 inches in 48 hrs.
That amount of water filled the pond in the first 8 hours, and started sending water over the emergency overflow in a major way for more than a day. I had grass established but not nearly enough and i lost a lot of dirt. I brought in more dirt, doubled the width of the overflow and did the whole thing with sod and staples.
Now the water level is correct and draining down the pipe overflow like it should be. Time to start making calls for fat heads!!!
