Anybody ever use livestock as compactors? Read that the manure might actually help seal a pond through some chemical action.

I have heard this too. My uncle swore that pigs would fix my leak between hooves and manure. Never seen any confirmation though.

I too have heard that pigs are very effective from several sources. I think you need a somewhat clay soil to begin with. They are good, but not miracle workers.

Assuming that you are talking about a dam, dams are best packed by a sheepsfoot roller. That roller is used to pack in increments as the dam is built. After the dam is built, it is too late.
I have always doubted that processed vegetation had any kind of chemicals that would cure a leaky pond bottom.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I think it might be hard to direct the animals where to walk, while using mechanical equipment you direct where it packs.

I think the combination of manure and hoove-compaction actually has been shown to be effective at sealing ponds, but it would not be my first choice.

They would need to get used up, like fertilizer. Might even be a great way to jumpstart a food chain.
