I've been missing from the forum lately because I've been busy breeding my dog and I'm about to get busier. She had her pups on May 1st, 10 beautiful, healthy babies, 7 girls and 3 boys!

Congrats! Now the work begins! (been there, done that)

How old is she? I like the little collars - I'm guessing the easiest way to tell them apart?

Thanks everyone! Yep, I'm already busy busy. The collars are rick-rak ribbons for identification. Because it's such a large litter I have to weigh each one twice a day to make sure everyone is getting enough to eat. Half of them, the lowest gainers, get on nipples first. This is a lot of work. I start them on gruel early because of this. They will outgrow their 1st collars in 6 days and I'll have to make more during the 8 weeks they will be with me. I dislike cutting nails, that's a lot of nails and it has to be done every two weeks!

Sarah is 6 years old, this is her 2nd and last litter. I have 8 of them sold already.

With my last litter I had to give one mouth to mouth. It was the runt and I also fed it formula with more stuff added to it. By the time 6 weeks rolled around it had caught up to the rest of the litter and actually passed one or two. 8 in that last litter. It's been a while, 1997 to be exact!

While in school I raised chocolate labs for 10 years....
I was able to pay cash for my first car when I was 16 mostly with saved puppy money...1992 ford Taurus....I would pay my younger sister one puppy worth of money each litter and she did all the work....

Loretta, do you have a younger sister to do the work for ya? There actually is tons of work involved for the next 8 weeks....

Esshup there always is one or two who wouldn't make it without drastic measures....also dang purebreds have all kinds of problems breeding whereas mutts got er down pat....

That was a great deal with your sister. I have Tom to help me and he's a great help but since they belong to me I do most of the work and foot all of the bills.

And yes it isn't unusual to lose one or two. This is my second litter and I've been blessed that I haven't lost any so far, 9 in the first litter. All these puppies are spoken for already except one so I don't want to lose any now. Most losses happen during whelping and the first 2 weeks.

I've been considering supplementing with formula but I'm afraid of causing digestive issues. I have a good formula recipe, we'll see. They are all mostly gaining but one or two can pop up with a little loss at weigh in (not the same pups each time). A smaller litter would be much easier for sure.

I haven't been around much because the puppies have been keeping me BUSY. Only a week or so to go before the puppies will be going to their new homes! Everyone is doing great.

This is how we move the puppies to their outside ex-pen. The bucket is on a wagon and we pass the puppies through a window instead of carrying each one down the porch steps. Yes, there are 10 puppies in that bucket, well that's what I call it. Almost 100 lbs of puppies.

You ever tried Royal Canin Labrador and lab puppy for your babies?

The puppy makes great fake pellet bait too because of hole. The adult makes a good catfish bait when sofened and put on strait hook.

Scott,
that looks like something you'd see in a Three Stooges episode.

Yeah, it does. I've seen other pictures like that too. That one looks older. I just pulled it off the internet.

I think the dog looks more beat than anyone!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Well, we're wrapping it up. The pups turned 8 weeks Wednesday and are starting to go to their new homes. It's bittersweet. Here's their last group photo taken at 8 weeks. Hope to be back to the forum soon.

loretta, congrats on a beautiful litter of pups! Momma and I have discussed breeding Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but we both know we would have 2 dozen of them trying to lay on the couch within a year. Not sure we could ever part with them.
