We finally bit the bullet and lined our 40 x 50 pond with a PVC liner. Finally holds water smile

One issue we have is that just below the rock line we can see the liner and it is too steep to hold the bull rocks without rolling in. We are curious if there is some sort of mat that could be placed below these rocks that would lay in the water to grow plants or a way to allow the rocks to be held below the water line as to to see the grey liner?

Thanks!

Bend some rebar "hooks" that you can pound into the soil above the waterline, but act as baskets to prevent the rocks from rolling below the waterline. If you have any welding skillz you can use a few welded together for better stability.
Have to spray paint them with aluminum spray to reduce rust. I did this in a small garden pond and it worked well until my son decided the rocks needed re-arranging. Hooks too far apart.

If you put enough rocks in they will built up on each other.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I like the hook idea. Especially the welding a horiz bar to them. If the bottom row stays in place, then keeping the ones above them in place is easy.

I'm trying to picture the scenario in my head. Assuming I have an accurate impression; would it be feasible to unroll and stake-secure a 3' width of 1" mesh hardware cloth (or chicken-wire) along the interior edge of the liner - and then lay a coating of quickset on top of the wire-mesh before laying the bull rock on top?
I'm thinking the mesh would provide some degree of purchase for the quickset, which in turn would secure the bull rock in place.
Just a thought... and entirely untested..

Just re-read the first post. I'd use the hook method to keep the rocks about 18" above the top of the liner. Take welded wire mats like they use for concrete, make them about 36" wide by however long they are. Bend up one long side, say 6". Put that long side in the pond, with the bend up. Slip teh other end over the wire hooks so they are held in place from sliding into the pond. Then put synthetic mesh over the wire mats. Fill that with dirt and get plants started.

If the plants are thick enough, the root system will hold all the dirt in place.

Yeah, it'll rust away, but by then maybe the plants will hold all the dirt in place.
