I heard this week that the best way to fertilize is with a water pump by placing a T in the intake hose and putting one hose in the liquid fertilizer and one in the lake. Has anyone tried this and if so what type of water pump do I need ????? Thanks

I guess it would work but am thinking of several considerations. I would assume that the mixture would be determined by the ratio of the 2 inlet lines to each other and that would, I believe, wind up being a trial and error matter. You could probably work it out mathematically, but I can't. I think it would take a fairly large body of water to justify it but you did say lake.

Although I'm not familiar with one inch pumps, I thing I would investigate them. The inlet hose on 2" and larger are pretty expensive and are ribbed. Getting a good seal on the Y might be tough. I doubt that I could do it right.

BTW, are you the David Reed from Fairfield that used to post here? If so, you have a lake and I can understand your reasoning.

The last two years of my life have been very hectic and I have not been able to participate much in the board. From time to time I will get a few minutes and try to catch the latest post.
On the pump...I was told to put a ball valve on the line going to the fertilizer. This way you can regulate the mixture. I think that I am going to give it a try. The last two years was a real pain using the pump that attaches to the boat motor. Plus my boat motor is worn out. I can buy a water pump for a fraction of the cost of an outboard plus other uses will probably come up that I can use the pump for.

I'm just trying to get geared up to fertilize the pond. I heard about using a water pump and what a great method it was and all but it was third hand info.
Holler sometime when your down this way.
My dad brought one of your kin folks out to the house about seven years ago. He was an older fellow and I believe that he had just gotten a degree from a local college...ring any bells ??

Hey David, I remember the pictures of you little boy and his huge bass. He must have been about 4 or 5 years old at the time. My offer for you to adopt me still stands. I'm cute and don't eat much.

The reason I mentioned the one inch pump is that I was told they could use a regular type garden hose as inlet but don't know that for sure. If it's true, you could get a lot of options on using it for your goals. A 2 inch would take some fancy rigging and might not give you as much control on the volume.

I had 9 kids on the pier yesterday. There ages ranged from 2-7. We filled a wire basket with crappie and bass. They had a blast!!!! One little six year old girl caught a 4" bluegill and put it in her pocket. Three hours later she was still pulling it from her pocket to look at and show off. As far as I know, the bluegill went home with her in her pocket. Too cute!!!
As for bass fishing. I've been too busy. Have only been in the boat once which was a week ago. My wife caught a 9lb, my son a 5lb and I caught an 8lb. As usual we cleaned about 15 lbs. under 16". You may have noticed that I posted some things under structures a few months ago. Well the concrete blocks that we placed in the 3-4' water really paid off. It was great fishing around the blocks.

Neat story David. I'm not surprised about you catching the big and plentiful bass. But, the high point of the post was the little girl with the pocketful of bluegill.

I went to the country this weekend and looked at the inlet hose of my 2 inch pump. It would really be tough to do any modification to get any type of Y. BTW, make sure your pump is set to only idle. I ran mine at too many RPM's and threw a rod. I understand that it is not uncommon. Glad nobody was close.

Dave, I'm going to have to reduce the intake from 2" down to 1". Then place a T in the line.
From the straight end of the T I will go into the lake and with the other I will have a ball valve and a line going into the 5 gal. fertilizer bucket. My outlet will also be reduced to 1"
A friend of mine heard from a reliable source that this is the cat's meow for fertilizing lakes and ponds.
I was hoping to get someone with some experience to make me feel more comfortable about all this before I spend the $$$$$$.
My biggest concern is how to keep the suction line in the water with the boat moving. Perhaps a weight attached to the line.
My friends source was the master himself (B.Lusk)
So that makes me feel comfortable that it will work.
The little girl is six years old. My wife took some photos of the kids and their fish. I will send you one when she gets them downloaded. This little girl is 100% Tom Boy and cute as a button.
She owns a Red Ryder bb gun and she brings frogs, lizzards and catapillars to school on a daily basis.

I just tow the tank of liquid fertilizer mixed water 10-1 fertilizer and empty it out through the hose on the tank. The undercurrents distribute it throughout the lake.

I meant to say I tow it out on the dam to the deepest part of the lake.

That will work. I have used that same setup to inject fertilizer in a homemade irrigation/sprinkler system. I have thought about using it to fertilize my lake but I haven't done it yet.
