Hello,
Does anyone have any advice in treating gill lice in brook trout? I own a small spring fed pond in wisconsin. After much research and an article in pond boss, I was able to establish a breeding population of brook trout, and seemingly out of the blue, gill lice have popped up on their gills and some of them have a really heavy parasite load. Is there any treatment at all? Is the pond permanently contaminated?

Are you sure it is not freshwater muscles, they have a larval stage that end up in the gils of fish...

Been reading about this, this morning. This is what has been tried: Gill Lice Treatment(The pic in this doc is pretty gross) It appears that Slice is not approved for use in the USA. I would at least make a few phone calls and see what the possibilities are. WI has a pretty big problem with this now. Are any of these fish from wild populations? Any of your water come from streams or rivers? Cecil raises Brook Trout. He may have some other info about this.

From what I am understanding about this. You may never get rid of this unless drastic measures are taken.
Don't quote me, but once established with fish in pond. Difficult to get treatment may not prove out, at all!

If it was my pond I'd drain and remove the fish and lime the pond bottom. Then treat with 10 ppm of potassium permanganate after refilling. Then flush.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I guess he didn't like what we said as he hasn't been back.
