I had a check valve 4ft away from my air stone under the water . my air pump is 5ft above the ground. My air pump runs 12 hours a day. My check valve broke so i had to get a new one. The new one really restricts the air flow. And i don't know who made the first one that worked well. Someone told me that i don't even need one since my air pump is 5ft above ground. Does this sound correct? Thanks Phoebe North eastern Wisconsin

With an airstone you want one so that on restart you are not pushing water as this can provide excessive backpressue on pump until it is exhausted. And Yes you need a checkvalve if you have a rotary vane pump so it will not let water back siphon, with a piston compressor it will not backsiphon.
