Hello everyone, hope everyone had safe holiday. I have a question regarding Boga Grip style scales. Anyone have any experience with them or can recommend a scale that is accurate and will last? Have BassPro, and Academy websites. The price range varies greatly. Read mixed reviews about accuracy on the different brands. Was leaning towards the Boga Grip but its quite spendy. was hoping for some input before buying it or another model. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Doc,
Greg Grimes sells a great scale that you can convert to grams for monitoring fish growth easier. It goes up to 50lbs. I keep it on my ATV at all times. The lake kit(sechi disk, tag gun, tags, growth chart for weight to length percentage, and fish ruler) is everything you need.

The real Boga grip can be certified by the IFGA for record fish. I don't know if the knock-offs can. George has one that he uses, hopefully he'll chime in.

Scott, you are correct. I have used an early Boga for over 10 years and find it very accurate – and also correct that they are IGFA certifiable.
Just to confirm continued accuracy of my Boga, I checked the calibrated weight of a gallon of water and it weighed 8.35lbs – interpolated .25> .... correct weight of 1 gallon fresh water.

I have dunked it in salt and fresh water and it continues accurate – it's a well engineered piece of equipment.

docg, if your Boga is not consistently accurate I would speak with the manufacturer – this is one of the most popular scales in use for sport fishing – and the most “knocked-off”.

The one Greg sells is a regular scale. I like it because I can monitor tagged fish growth to the gram. The boga grip scale would be nice to have to also, especially in a boat,or for children to safely hold fish for pics.

We have a Boga grip too. My main complaint with it is that it knocks significant weight off caught fish. Amazing how that 8 pounder shrinks to 6 when you weigh them! :-)

We did tie a string to it just to ensure it doesn't take a permanent splash.

It is well made.

Floats a good idea. Wonder how big a float it takes to float it...

Butt Ugly Boga
Ranger - you are Sooooo right - knocks at least a couple of pounds off a 8 pounder and a pound off a ..... - well - you know... grin
This is the best way that I have found to always have a 15# size Boga handy - coiled key chain holder - couple of bucks from WallyWorld...
Floats are most often used for 30 and 60lb size models....

Use 1 in saltwater
Very handy and accurate
Buy the original and buy it once
Mine has a float attached
It would be great if I could catch fish to use it more

What's the difference in an original Boga Grip and "newer ones?". Those things are expensive and the cost has kept me from buying one. If they aren't accurate why would anyone even want one?

I can understand that they are good for lipping fish but....

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, the Boga is VERY accurate and a very well engineered product.
Knockoffs are like comparing a jon boat to your Ranger... grin

Dave, I think the "newer ones" are the knockoff's. Boga's are still made and I'd trust them.

The actual Boga Grip like everyone here is saying, is by far the best scale I've ever used. Their customer support is great as well. I actually had a defective one and they replaced it for me (even paid shipping).

My only complaint about them is that the scale is semi hard to read (the weight lines are very close together). If the sun hits them the right way it's almost impossible to see.

Sure Boga Grips are wonderful, but sometimes,
if you've caught the catch of a lifetime,
you simply must use the scale that you have with you...

Not to mention that Boga Grips do have limitations on what you can weigh with them...

i resemble that remark.

i own a boga thanks to george (and my lovely bride). my only comment is if you want weight measurements (i.e. for little fish) more accurate than 1/4 lb, get on of those newer model digital lip grippers.

eric, that is dennis. he craves attention.

here's my boga in action on a 3.5 pound donaldson strain cutbow trout (couple weekends ago)

they are fantastic tools for fishing, C&R, photo opps, etc.., just no weight accuracy below 1/4 lb.
