When I go to petsmart I see a lot of gravid grass shrimp. Instead of spending a fortune on buying 2000-3000 of the critters, could I just buy the gravid females and have them spawn in a pond water tank with pond-native plants? Also, what is the average offspring production of grass shrimp?
Thanks in advance!
Connor

The juveniles go through a larval state, and float around like plankton, feeding on plankton. Takes a lot of plankton to keep them healthy, so they usually do not survive well in an aquarium.

If you could maintain the right kind of green water in the aquarium or outside kiddy pool, raising them from gravid adults could work.

Are the Petsmart animals the same as our native grass shrimp?

Generally not... The ones found at Pets Mart and most big box chains are grass shrimp native to FL and thus do not do well in more northern waters. Do a search on grass shrimp, there is an extensive thread on them on the site. They are how I found Pond Boss.

WILL the shrimp overwinter in North Texas? I have someone picking up all the shrimp at Petsmart today so it's a lot of money to be used on something that won't survive. URGENT!

Yes, paludosus are the species of grass shrimp found in the freshwaters of FL. They are also generally the species found in big box pet stores.

It depends on the winter water temps, but that'd be my WAG.

Order the ones Fattig Fish Farm sells. They will do fine in Texas and just about anywhere else in the US.
