Hi everyone,

I just joined this site and wanted to introduce myself. I am a tilapia farmer in Northern Indiana, we have about 20,000 tilapia growing in Goshen, IN. We have them fingerling to market weight. Please feel free to contact me if you need fish.

Thank you,

Ted,

I know he has blues but I think he has other species of tilapia as well. His fish are 98 percent male but he will be getting in a bunch of females soon.

He's pretty busy so hopefully he'll get back here soon.

All I know is Rex has awesome fish and service but this guy is only 20 minutes from my house. I can't pass that up if I need any. I can pick them up myself.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Will Tilapia grow to eating size in a .63 acre pond in SW Michigan?
Do you have to feed them?

Jim 100,

I hear the blues do better outside, at any rate; we have them at any size you need. Pulled one out today that topped nearly 3.5lbs or anything under that... I have it.

A simple "SWAG" purity test is to lower water temp to 48 degrees with ice and hold it there..any hybridization and a non-pure Blue tilapia will die within 12-20 hours....a pure strain will live unless and until injured and will also continue to eat some.

The slightest genetic impurity causes the lower lethal water temp in a blue to go from 42-45* to 52-55*

Plus, impurities and inbreeding will cause the fish to eventually cease growing at around 3/4 pound after about 4-8 generations of inbred offspring...a pure strain is never affected by inbreeding....or at least mine haven't in an estimated f36000 generation from the original 30 fish....I have brood stock topping 20 pounds.

Jim, yes, they will grow to eating size in a typical sport fishing pond wih no additional feeding needed, however, Tilapia are illegal in open water stocking in Michigan...That said, several pond owners have picked up fish in Ohio and Indiana and taken them back home...Presumedly for indoor only use of course... whistle

ewest,I'm about as dumb as it gets when trying to post pictures. I know I've been saying this for the last couple years but I will get the pictures on PondBoss.(even if I have to hire someone to post them for me).

This is his situation right now.... He has a 3 acre fenced in backyard with a half acre pond in it. He has 4 other dogs for company... One St.Bernard(3 yrs old), One Golden Retreiver(12 yrs old), One NewFoundland(2 yrs old) and One New Foundland pup(4 months old). Mason will not take crap from any of them except the puppy.

All of our dogs are inside dogs(especially Mason, he has the shortest hair of all of them). And when he gets cold, he is the first one to cuddle up with the bigger dogs. You wouldn't believe how good of a watch-dog he has become....but he is like a puppy when anyone comes in. He is one of the best moves I've ever made getting a dog.

Mason is getting older and grayer but he has grown all of his hair back and like I said "he looks like a blue ribbion hog" I'm serious. He is a fat dog and will never have to worry about starving again. smile
