Anyone have any info on what their cold tolerance is like? Could they survive outside in a pond type setup in the Northern USA or Southern Canada?

If I recall correctly, their native range is to about southern Illinois in the Mississippi drainage. So they may or may not do well further north or you may have winter kills on especially bad winters... Depending on the state you live in, they may be illegal to stock at all.
