I'm about to have a pond built by daming up a draw and digging it out. The plan is to install a concrete gravity fed livestock waterer on the back side of the dam. What would be the best way to install the supply line under the dam to the tank?

Welcome to the forum I don't have have experience with doing that but I know a few people on this forum do. You should get some good suggestions.

If you install the pipe over the top of the dam or bury it shallow you can use it to siphon water and not have to have a penetration of the dam.

I thought about a siphon, but I need it not to freeze and I also worried about losing siphon and the cattle being without water.

How will you prevent the tank from freezing?

Here's a link to the tank I plan on installing,http://www.siprecast.com/agricultural_products/freezeprooftanks.htm. It is installed with the bottom 1/3 to half buried and then also part of the top is covered. There is a valve in the tank that you can crack open to let water out and get the water moving. The constant stream overflows in to the drain tube and exits away from the tank.

I'm assuming that the dam isn't completed yet.

It looks like that tank is designed to be used with a continual flow of water. I'd put a line thru the dam ending up above the bottom of the pond so you're not sucking dirt from the bottom of the pond. Make sure you have a way to shut off the pipe on both the pond side and the stock tank side of the dam for future maintenance.

It't be a siphon system, that's the only way that I see it working. I don't know how deep you are planning on making the pond, but if you are going to stock fish, then you have to make a decision. Do you raise the stock tank water supply so there is enough water left in the pond for the fish if the siphon springs a leak?

You'd have to really freeze proof the pipes.

Are you planning on having water continually flowing into the watering tank? If so, make sure your pond has water coming into it in sufficient quantity to support the water that the cattle will use, plus to make up for evaporation.

If you are not planning on continual flow, then I still see a freeze problem with the tank if it gets cold out.
