this is my first post here, i'm currently building a pond that is roughly 275 ft long and 225 feet wide roughly a little over an acre.the pond is in ontario canada and will rely on runoff to fill it(30 acres)most of the pond will be in the 5-9 ft range with a couple of deeper holes(15ft). i am using a case 33 ton excavator and a d4 dozer. at around 7ft of depth we hit some dark grey/blue clay that we are going to spread up the banks. how thick should it be ?

12 inches generally, however the thickness can be a product of the clay (how impermeable is it to water), the water depth plan above the clay.

Make sure you water and compact the clay layer with a sheep's foot vibratory roller.............remember a dozer is designed to be light on their feet, their tracks spread their weight out over a large surface (theirs tracks) giving you lower psi at the soil surface.

Thanks for the pics. I always like to see a project underway. However, I will say that the comment above is important to remember. You need to make sure the clay is compacted, otherwise, it will not hold water. Many DIY builders think the dozer is heavy enough, when in reality, it is not close. What type of excavators have you been using so far? I always like to know what kind people are using!
