Does anyone know any secrets to keeping beavers away from a pond. The critters are a problem, they dig holes, they chew down our new trees. Any ideas out there?

If you can/do harvest the beaver, try to leave the largest, meanest looking one and only one as it will word off others.
trapping season is coming and trappers are always looking for places to do there work, talk to some friends, or if you are really desperate run an ad in the paper. Talking to a game warden may give a name of some one with a good reputation.

If you can/do harvest the beaver, try to leave the largest, meanest looking one and only one as it will word off others. That's kinda hard to do when trapping. Beaver sets are either kill sets or drowning sets - not catch and release sets like dry land trapping for canines or cats. Besides, it'll start looking for a mate for company. It's better to take them all out if possible.

I leave the biggest meanest one , dead , and nailed through the tail to a stump in shallow water to ward off newcomers. Plus it works as a source of worms for the fish. Just don’t put it near the dock.

The only silver bullet that I know of is an electric fence, but that only works if you don't have any stream or trickle of water going into the pond. It's hard to put a fence over water, low enough to it to deter a swimming beaver. They can just dive under it. There's other silver bullets, but they usually are hard cast, and travelling at a high rate of speed.

Spottlighting them were legal does work well.
and generally the oldest ugliestbeaver has escaped from traps before, and has a good memory, so this is the best way to harvest him, should that be your goal.

Stevens Model 200 .308 Winchester Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 Scope Total Cost about $650 brand new. I guarantee that as long as you have that and a nice comfy spot within 100 yards to sit and wait...you will never have a beaver problem again. These items may be "low end", but they will perform the task at hand VERY well. Have no doubt. Plus you have a great all around rifle for hunting deer, hogs, black bear, antelope, mountain goats, moose, elk, or pretty much any large game in the United States.
