Can anybody direct me to a thermometer that will check water temps at maybe one foot deep, 6 foot deep, and 12 foot deep? It would be great to find something that stays in the water full time and have the info sent to a digital screen. Any ideas??? thanks for any info

I've had this thermometer for 3 years, it's mounted on the dock in a box and the probe is in 5 ft of water, but it does have a 10ft. long wire to the probe.

Not sure how long the wire is on mine but it is a cheap one from Bass Pro Shops.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

That one made by Chaney may just be the ticket. And it works well in Water? The price is right. Thanks for the info. I will order that one if no more ideas come my way.

Yeah it works great buy I did run the temp. probe and wire down a pvc pipe to protect it from ice and critters. I drilled a hole at the bottom of the pipe to expose the probe but the wire is protected inside the pipe.,

I ordered the Chaney thermometer and have it on its way. It will be interesting to see how much variation in temp between the different depths throughout the summer.

This is also a very handy remote wireless thermometer that I found looking on Amazon. It reads up to 300 away. Mount at the pond - read the water temperature in the house.

Bill I believe that unit only measures air temperature.
Here's a unit that has a remote transmitter with a 10 ft. probe.

I got the new Chaney thermometer in the mail today. Water temp was 67.2 at two foot down, 65.3 at six foot down, and 56.8 at 10 foot down. I was surprised to see that I had to get so deep before getting into cooler water. All the more reason not to over airate. But how much airation is enough?

It depends on what your goal is. What is the goal?

I believe he's wanting to keep Trout in the pond. I've seen numbers tossed around that trout require between 5mg/l and 7mg/l to survive. The only way to be sure if your aerating enough is to have an O2 meter and check the O2 levels along with the temp. Unfortunately, the accurate ones aren't cheap.

esshup provides sound information. If the pond is in Mid MI, only 12 ft deep and not spring fed nor any well water inputs, then you are going to have a VERY difficult if not impossible time maintaing trout for a year, two yrs or longer. Mid MI gets quite warm for extended periods in midsummer. I got my MS at CMU. If your pond was quite a bit deeper, near oligotrophic conditions, quarry-like with minimal shallow water, then you could feasably use hyolimnetic aeration to maintain the requirements of lower temps (<70F) and adequate DO 5mg/L (min. for trout) as esshup notes. Go to any trout farm look at the conditions they use to raise trout. They don't very often do in in ponds and there is a very good reason for that - doesn't work without well or sping water inputs.

Being in mid-MI your pond, although shallow, is a good candiate for raising cool water fish such as YP and SMB.
