I am not sure how to even explain this but here goes: We put in a pond last fall on land we had just bought. One area was always yet so I though I could put some drain tile down to feed the pond. So the pond went in and I dug a little hole where it was wet and found about 12" down a hole about an 1" or so wide that water was flowing out of. Now this is on a hill so I started digging to see how far up the hill this went. Everywhere I found the hole it was about 12" down. I stopped after it just keeped going. Now it only flows in spring and fall(I assume when the water table is high). I guess I'm not sure what this is, I'm confussed as to why it is 12" down on a hill. I would think it would be deeper as I go up the hill. I guess my question is has anyone ever heard of something like this and I am trying to get as much water to pond as possible, so is there anything I can do with this to increase water supply, dig well etc. Any help or info would be appreciated

It sounds like there is a layer of clay beneath the water that's keeping it close to the surface.

Yep. If you have a restrictive soil horizon such as a heavy clay beneath your topsoil, water may percolate downward until it hits that horizon and then be forced to flow laterally. And since soil horizons kinda mimic topography, the depth to that restriction could be consistent.

When you dig, is there a change in soil types where you hit the water?

vamaz you sound like a geologist? See what the impermeable barrier/layer is , its thickness and what is below. It may be possible to vector it to the pond but it may go out as well as in.

thanks for the info..yea there is a lot of clay in the area I am in. I have directed it towards the pond and it is running nicely. Just thought maybe there was a spring or something, which I would of maybe dug a well or something

I am, ewest, but I don't mean to sound like one. It may be as simple as it sounds based on the details, but it could be something entirely different. Someone with a better understanding of the geology and soils of that area might have another idea.

I bet there are plenty of pond guys that wish they had a mysterious supply of underground water piping to their pond. I say if it means water, then it is good!

Can I get an Amen to that?

CJBS2003, I'm a little ways north of Ruckersville. I'm sure when I get my pond going the runnoff will be sufficient, but I've also got a little trickle - technically I guess its a seasonal spring - in a location that surfaces near what will eventually be my waterline. Hoping it may make the difference during otherwise dry summer months.

Daryla You are one of the lucky ones to have a constant water supply most of the time we here in Texas are praying for that. There are a lot of ways to get more water but they all cost a lot. Most of the time mother nature is the best source for water.
Vamaz it always helps all of us when a pro gets on and helps Thanks a bunch. Keep up the good work

Yea..kinda of lucky I found something...We have only had the property since July and at that time there was no pond but the owner actually mention that area was always wet when it rained..and I did notice that too. I took some wire coat hangers and used them to find the water and the hangers went crazy when I walked by the area. Unfortunaly it will not help me when you need it most...dry hot summer. I have other issues to worry about first as it seems my pond we put in aug is not holding water..looking to have it compacting later in spring in hope that will help.
