My brother has been out of work for 14 months now and has been climbing the walls trying to get a job. He's got a degree in marketing and is a whiz in accounting, and has worked as a comptroller for quite a few years in the manufacturing industry. He sends out a stamp book full of resumes weekly with no luck. He absolutely hates collecting unemployment and is no slouch. My parents have been helping him hang on to his home.
He believes his age, 53, isn't helping him and has had some companies not even consider him because he has been "unemployed" which I find reprehensible.
Some say he could relocate, but the problem many have here is they can't sell their homes. Tomorrow he has a "phone" interview for a city job.
Just hoping the power of prayer might do the trick!
Thanks!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Prayers for sure Cecil. And we want to know when they're answered. Mind sharing his first name with us?

Prayers for Victor from MI!
My brother recently found a job after 21 months. Pretty slim pickings out there.
A local news station had a report the other day that stated if one was unemployed for 12 months or more, you only have a 9% chance of getting a job. Whats up with that!
We still have companies moving out or closing on a daily basis.

For the last 8 years I've been a Co-Leader of a networking Group for "in transition" Managers and Professionals. 2.5 years ago we averaged 35 attendees. Now, we generally have about 350 per meeting. These days, landing a job can be a contact sport with a lot of variables. This includes, but is not limited to, targeted resumes, company research, interview skills and preparation, and ATTITUDE. All are essential.
After 30 years as a Headhunter, I find that the questions you answer aren't as important as the ones you ask.
Age discrimination certainly exists but it always has. However, you can't afford to dwell on negatives. If you think, even subconsciously, that someone won't hire you, you're probably right.
Cecil, have Victor give me a call. 817 268 6820

Straight ahead, Victor Baird. Straight ahead.....

Thank you gentlemen. I'll keep you posted.
Dave, I'll pass on the phone number but he's not negative i can assure you. If I was in his shoes (and it could still happen) I'd have really bad attitude.

I talked to my brother today. He was upbeat about the interview. Said there were 13 other candidates. I'm confident about the power of prayer!

Best of luck to your brother Cecil. I am the same age.
He will get something.
I know a gal who worked at H&R Block just during tax season each year. She didn't have a degree or the Accounting background of your brother, but she did well for the 2 or 3 months that she worked - and made a lot of contacts.

Cecil, my prayers are with your brother as well as your family and the many others in our nation going through this period of economic hardship.
I have been hesitant to go public with my personal situation because I have found that many challenges open up new opportunities – one door closes and another door opens. I grew up in the Great Depression.
My youngest son is in the same age group as your brother, and like your brother has a BBA in marketing and has never been without a job. Unfortunately his experience has been in product sales for the home building industry. His company “laid off” their entire sales force and the owner of the company is trying to survive.
I haven’t wanted to go public with this, but previous to his unemployment he went through a nasty divorce that cost him his life savings but managed to hang on to his property and “our” ponds.
He, like your brother is spending most of his time interviewing for jobs that’s may require a career change since home building activity return is in the distant future.
He currently is cutting firewood from 100-year-old red oaks that died from the drought several years ago, so if anyone out there needs a warm fire during this cold spell, let me know. A positive attitude and open mind to take advantage of any opportunity goes a long way.
He’s currently investigating feasibility of timber “harvesting” (sawmill) and marketing cedar lumber, which we have in abundance on our property.
Fortunately we are able to keep our two grandsons sons in college.
In spite of my being drug down the road and back a couple of times this year, I can only give prayer and support to the many folks going through tough economic times. A positive attitude and flexibility in career opportunities are required.
Told too much private information, but maybe some help for your brother.
George

George,
Thank you for sharing. It means a lot to me you were willing to give up that private information. I'll be saying prayers for your son too!

I am in a similar situation; so I will keep Victor in my prayers too. My woodworking hobby at least brings a little something from online sales and commissions for friends. It also gets my mind off the job situation. There are only so many hours(days, weeks?) you can spend hunting for jobs before you start going a little crazy .
