Esshup and I made a few seine passes through my production pond yesterday, and today I was sorting out the larger YOY bluegills (most likely first hatch of the spawning season). These are two generations removed from 200 bluegills I originally got from Bruce Condello. I call them Bairdello bluegills. grin

I'm shooting for a few hundred for one of the the RAS tanks in the basement. I've already brought in about 250 YOY yellow perch in the 5 to 8 inch range that will be in a tank with about 250 bluegills of the same size. These 3 to 4 + inch bluegills will be combined in another tank with 3 inch yellow perch.

Sorry for the blurry picture but this fish wouldn't stop moving!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Nice BG Cecil, with them being in the RAS over the winter do you think they will be mature enough by next summer to spawn?

Why thank you Eric, Aaron and Bruce. grin

Of course Bruce's genetic selection had a lot to do with it!

I think they would be ready to spawn next summer even if they didn't overwinter in the RAS. Dr. Whetzel of Lincoln University, that is an expert on bluegills, says yearlings can and will spawn if there is no competition from larger older bluegills.

What I'm excited to find out is if these fish grow one inch per month like my other RAS gills, is if they will be 10 inches by summer at only one year of age! I could have 12 inch yellow perch by age one too!

Well done. Those are pigs.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks Dave but like I said most of it is due to Bruce's genetic selection.

I hope to add some yellow perch YOY pics up to 8 inches this morning. I've had about 250 in a 55 gallon drum overnight inside near the RAS tank with a pump splashing the surface for aeration. The pond water they are in started out at 48 F. and increased to about 62 overnight. I've since got it to 69 F. and since my RAS tank water is 72 Fahrenheit I'm close enough to transfer them to the RAS tank. They'll get a quick dip in saltwater strength water to kill any parasite hitchhikers and in they go.

I thought I saw some tubby ones when I was transferring them from the seine to the tank!

Get that other tank set-up and running. It'll be interesting to see what the growth rates are.

Going as fast as I can. Trying to do two things at once is not easy! grin
