I know a metal fabricator (employee) that about 8 yrs ago made his own windmill that he copied from a standard design. The air pump was the difficult part and he never completed that part. Windmill is up and functioning but it does not pump air into the pond. Good luck with that project. IF you consider ALL your time and cost for parts involved, you could buy one new or used cheaper, plus commercial one would probably operate better, more efficiently, and you would not have to make your own replacement/rebuild/maintence parts. If you worked your job the hours it takes to build from scratch a windmill, and buy one, IMO you will be money ahead.

thank you very much sir for your insight and very good points, I really want to make my already beautiful pond environment even better, but I know making it so is goin to be a great adventure....I am leaning towards the diffuser type system, I just dont want to look out and see something electrical by my pond either such as a box or a pump, something that is low profile and blends with the surroundings would be a plus!

IIRC, you can run air hose up to about 1,000 feet. So depending upon where you have power you could have the air pump quite a distance from the pond. Many folks here have build boxes for their air pumps that look quite nice.
