I was at the pond today and I thought I saw a cormorant. I'm not 100% sure but it looked like one. After he saw me he circled the pond a few times and then left.

How bad are they? Do I need to "convince" him to leave?

you'll get varying opinions. for me, i have too many sunfish and not enough predators, so i welcome the wildlife at the pond. tho i suspect most here will not care for water turkeys at their ponds.

when a nice fat 5 lb lmb is speared, wasted, and dead along the shore, well...enough said.

3 things I don't let stay at the lakes -- cormorants head the list. Next are otters and then beaver. That one will call in his buddies and then you will have 20+. You ask how bad - see below - so long 2 lb SMB

My buddy in Texas has problems with them during their migration in the Spring, and again in the Fall. He has a permit, and between him and his hired hands they take over 200 a year.

Rob, they are bad, real bad. However, they are also Federally protected.

If anything bad happens to one around your pond, keep your mouth shut. The Fed Law types might think you had something to do with it. Of course, we know that nobody on here would do anything like that.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Just got back from my minnow pond. It is close to drying up. There they were, two cormoarants helping themselves to my fish. I went and got my cormorant repellent device but they were gone when I got back. As low as my minnow pond is, I'm sure they will clean it out before I can get it seined.

In Dog Beers, I've had one.

This post reminded me of when I first saw cormorants on the Columbia River during a trip with my dad. He told me how the Japanese and Chinese put a ring and leash around the bird's neck and use them to fish…the ring prevents them from swallowing their catch.

^ ^ It looks like there just might be a fish in there.

Dave,

You're just to funny! grin

I still say you remind me of a younger version of T. Boone Pickens!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
