Okay, here's an example of the BG I'm translocating into my pond. This one croaked on the way home, so he sat real quiet-like for the photo op.

What species/hybrid am I dealing with?

I think you forgot to post the picture. grin

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Looks like a dead green sunfish to me. No big loss.

Ooops! shocked

Translocating, I like that. Probably one of the bigger GSF I have ever seen.

Really? I was pulling them out repeatedly that big and bigger.

In a way that's kind of sad if that means I can't expect much more growth...

...Looking at the picture again, maybe it's deceiving. That smaller ring underneath it is the size of a soda can.

They can grow large if properly managed. I have been managing my pond for three years, and have been able to turn a stunted population of 2-3" GSF into 7-8" on average, and I have caught two that were ten inches.

Congratulations you are the proud owner of GSF. IMHO GSF can be managed like any other sunfish. With property culling you can get nice sized GSF. Look at what Bbjr has done. DIED and I both have GSF over 10 inches. DIED has some that weigh in at over 1 pound.

Oh and by the way, a heartfelt thank you for your translocation efforts!

errrr, like others have said, that's NOT a BG.

I might be wrong, but they'll compete for the same food as the smaller LMB in the pond, and they won't get as large as BG will.

BUT, they do make for some good fishing for the kids.

The only nice thing I will say about GSF is they tend to be found where no other Sunfish are!

There are some ten inchers in my pond...And countless thousands in the 2-4" range. More than my big Blue catfish, CC, and LMB can eat in a season.

Mainly just keep the population in check. Too many fish in a population=stunting. If you keep the population balanced for the amount of forage available, the size of the pond, and the amount of predators available, you should be able to achieve satisfactory growth.

So what is your main goal in raising them and growing them out to a nice size?

Do you like to eat them?

Are they just for recreation?

Do you happen to feed them?

Please explain.

As long as there is Diet Coke an Mentos we have enough fuel to take us anywhere we need to be.

Including Naples, Italy.

I just updated my Heretic Tracking software, it's significantly faster now.

Oh and put down the Potato Chips, how many times have I told you you'll spoil your dinner.
