Myself and 6 others have a 28 acre lake along with the farm for hunting. The lake is as old as I am, and thats 53. I have started taking out peanut bass less than 14". It use to be eat up with crappie, and about 15 years ago,, I got out about 500 of those, and that helped a bunch. There is a decent bluegill population in the lake, but maybe more shellcracker. Now I have talked to Lusk and Grimes, and Lusk seemed to think as far as very limited money goes, the following is a good idea to get some forage in there and fatten up the bass. I got 120 dozen shiners 3-5" and turn them loose in the lake. Also, at the same time, I let 40 dozen small shiners loose for immediate forage. And it was that--an hour later, they were getting chummed up by bass and maybe a crappie or few. One week later, I got 120 9-11 inch gizzard shad and released them into the lake. I know the shad will spawn once for sure this year. Worse case, I may have to seine out some shad in 15 years if they reproduce too well. The lake has a good bass population in it,, and I want to give them plenty to eat. Do you guys like this , or do you see fatal mistakes. Others want us to spend a lot of money and shock the lake and do an analysis...We do not have lots of $$$ to get technical, 1,000.00 to shock the lake. Thus far we have spent 625.00 One rainy day in early April this year, I threw a buzzbait and caught about 60 bass. Of those, 16 were peanuts, I took them out. Of the rest, they were an average of 3 lbs , and several 4-6 lbs. Three days before all this, I caught a 10.5 that had spawned. She was flat, and very long, I thought she may weigh 11. She had a big head, but a little poor. Most of the 3's, and 4's were healthy looking. I had prefer you private e-mail me to n4gnr@windstream.net I thank you for your time and opinions. Dan...in n.e. If both Lusk and Grimes say something, I tend to go along with them.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
