What a great site! Been reading for days now, and have only scratched the surface of useful info.

Anyways my prospective pond site is in the North Georgia Appalachians, about 12 miles from both the Tennessee and North Carolina border.

I am in the very early stages of planning my 1 or 2 acre pond so i'm mostly here to learn, but maybe in the future I can contribute.

Any other folks from North Georgia, SE Tennessee, Western NC active here?

Welcome to PB. There are a bunch of members in that area. Thanks for posting as that is contributing. We had a PB meeting in Atlanta a few years ago with IIRC about 40 attendees.

Welcome Jay. I live in midwest GA (right where I 20 goes into AL.
Think seriously about adding trout when you are stocking. They probably last a lot later into the spring/summer "up north" where you live.

Just do it...

Thanks \:\)

What I stock is going to be based on what size my pond ends up being, and after I have done a lot more research.

We used to have quite a few folks up here that had trout ponds when I was a kid, never really knew how well they did but I imagine they were ok. I always fished the local creeks and rivers for my trout.

The climate has been so erratic here with abnormally hot summers and long droughts since the mid 80's that I believe most of these ponds are now gone. At least the old ones I remember are no longer around, and I haven't noticed any new ones in years.

Hard question rmedgar, but I am shooting to start pushing dirt after the spring rains stop. I am almost certain my site is a good one for a decent pond, however in this economy it might be held off longer because of money.

This has been in my head for a long time and one good thing about the economic slowdown and lack of (my) work is that I can actually take a breath and start doing something for myself and family.

What I don't want to do is half-arse it like most things are done nowadays. I am starting to get older and eventually this land will pass on to my son, so in a way I thinking more long term.

Hey! and Welcome Crazy_Jay!

I'm not too far from you - I'm in Athens, GA.

I don't know anything about ponds that I didn't learn by coming here and asking questions and reading the fine magazine. But, I will say that the folks here are friendly, knowledgeable, very helpful, and often quite silly. ;\)

It's a fun bunch to hang out with - virtually speaking.

If you're ever around Athens, gimme a shout - I'll show you my pond.

If you're too scared to throw that bait where the fish are, why did you tie it on?

Hey neighbor \:\)

Yeah you are not far as the crow flies. If I do get out that way I will give you a holler.

What do you stock? How long have you had your pond? Do you think North Georgia has got a lot warmer over the last 2 decades? (Athens is kinda more Piedmont plateau than appalachia I think?)

Go Dawgs!!!

Welcome Jay. Hang around and keep participating. By now, I expect that you have noticed that we have a friends and family outlook and some of it has nothing to do with wet spots in the ground.

If I were contemplating another pond, I would buy and read the book, "Perfect Pond...Want One?" It's about planning the pond and it's environment. You can get it from the Pond Boss office and could save you a lot of headaches and $$$$$.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
